I’ D FIRST gotten the idea about Paul McCartney during the era when I used to watch Craig Ferguson, a Scottish actor-comedian, performing his late-late-night television monologue. This was during the phase when the monologue was filled with wit, knowledge, references to Shakespeare, and once even a recitation of several lines from an Elizabeth Barrett Browning sonnet. Perhaps he knew so much because he had been educated in Scotland, not in the United States.

The pronunciation of the word “breadth” in the sonnet was a real surprise, a pleasant surprise, his actor’s voice as deep and complicated as Laurence Olivier’s. This was before the content of his chatting changed to digestive disturbances and sexual perversion.

At the end of that better era—he was referring to poor Paul McCartney on the day Sir Paul’s personal troubles were announced—he’d said in his new, jokey, ageist showbiz style, “Ladies, Paul McCartney’s back on the market. Who’s interested in a sixty-three-year-old vegetarian?” These may not be his exact words.

I raised my hand, at least mentally. The actor-comedian apparently thought vegetarianism was a joke. He had stated before his reason for giving it up—he loved bacon—never having given a thought to the feelings and lives of our intelligent fellow creatures, the pigs.
